How to Choose the Right Metal Building Size

Choosing a metal building size is the decision everything else depends on — the door you can fit, the vehicle you can park, and whether you outgrow the building in three years. Width, length and leg height are the three numbers worth settling before you start picking colors.

Start with what goes inside, not the footprint

Measure the largest thing you plan to keep in there, then add working room around it. A full-size pickup runs close to 20 feet, so a 20-foot-deep building holds the truck and very little else — no walking space at the front, no shelving across the back. Most people who regret a build regret the depth.

The three numbers that matter

Width sets your clear span — the open floor you get with nothing in the middle to work around.

Length is the cheapest dimension to buy up front and the most expensive to add later.

Leg height decides your door. Taller legs make room for a taller roll-up, which is what an RV, a camper, or a lifted truck needs. If a specific vehicle has to fit, measure its height and we will confirm the leg and door combination instead of guessing at it.

Rules of thumb, then real numbers

Two vehicles and nothing else is the smallest most owners end up happy with. Two vehicles plus a workbench and shelving wants noticeably more floor than that. A working shop — room to move around equipment set along one wall — wants more again.

Those are starting points, not specifications. Price two or three sizes side by side and the difference in cost per foot usually makes the decision for you.

Leave room to grow

Extending a building later means new end framing, more foundation, and often another permit. Buying one bay longer than you need today generally costs a fraction of adding that bay in two years.
